Granite is an igneous rock composed of mostly two minerals: quartz and feldspar. It is an intrusive rock, meaning that it crystallized from magma that cooled far below the earth’s surface.  Granite is composed mainly of quartz and feldspar with minor amounts of mica, amphiboles and other minerals. This mineral composition usually gives granite a red, pink, grey or white color with dark mineral grains visible throughout the rock.

Many people recognize granite because it is the most common igneous rock found at Earth’s surface and because granite is used to make many objects that we encounter in daily life.

Its natural beauty is unsurpassable and its wide variety of colours and shapes make it suitable to match virtually any requirement including kitchens, vanities and bath areas for both interior and exterior within domestic homes and commercial premises. Where ever placed, granite will add an element of elegance.

As Granite is a natural stone it will sustain scratched and other damage over time. But with more than 15 years of experience, Stone Seal can resolve virtually any granite problem and help maintain their original spark for longer.

Stone Seal’s highly skilled technicians are qualified to restore granite and can customize their services to just about any space. Here’s a look at a few of our preferred techniques:

  • Diamond Honing – Diamond abrasives smooth stone in high-traffic areas.
  • Diamond & Powder Polishing – Super-fine abrasive powders and diamond discs restore high-reflective finishes to worn surfaces.
  • Enhancer – Brings out the beautiful, natural colors in stone surfaces.
  • Impregnators and Sealers – Protects porous stone from permanent stains while allowing it to breathe.

By its nature, granite is moisture-resistant and a tough hard wearing and versatile stone. However it is quite porous and discolouring is very easy to occur. Liquids with colour, such as like grape juice and red wine or cooking oil and fat can all discolour the counter top. Pizza grease can be a culprit, too, when it soaks through the bottom of the pizza box and onto the counter top.

With a porosity ratio between 0.4% – 1.5%, it is always recommended to seal granite. A sealant acts to help the stone resist dirt and spills which can cause etching and staining. When applied, it will block liquids from seeping into the granite and a properly sealed counter top will cause liquids to bead on the surface.

To maintain the look and slip resistance of the granite, it is important to use a high quality, invisible impregnating sealer. Stone Seal are experts at choosing the right sealant for the job – the one that will protect your investment for years to come. Our number one priority is to give you a surface you can use and enjoy for longer.

It is advised that most kitchen granite counter tops are sealed on an annual basis. Keep in mind that different pieces of granite have different porosities and some counter top areas may need to be sealed more often than others. To determine if it’s time to reseal a counter top, dribble some water onto the surface. If it beads up, great, but if the water soaks into the granite, it’s time to reseal.

The key to keeping your granite looking new is the proper cleaning, polishing and sealing of the stone. We make it a point to educate our customers on proper stone care.

Granite is different than marble when it comes to its recommended usage, care and maintenance. It can be cleaned using the same process as marble but with a different grade of diamonds. For maintaining granite, we recommend cleaning the surface using a quality stone safe neutral PH stone cleaner.
